R&D / Manufacture Shop
The Integral manufacture and maintenance facility is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This facility also contains the Research and Development division that is responsible for the design, development, testing and continued improvement of the IsoTool technology.
Design and development of this technology has been ongoing for several years. The aim of the project is to provide the industry with a new method of isolating sections of land based liquid pipelines. The Scientific Research and Educational Development department of the Canadian government was approached and a grant was approved to assist in development of this concept.
It was mandated by the design team that at least a 2 to 1 safety margin be required on all critical parts of the machine, with redundant fail-safes included where ever possible. As the various interacting segments of the tool were developed, they were individually tested to assure that these requirements were met when assembly was complete.
The electronics division was tasked with providing a wireless system to provide remote, real time, 2-way communication and data retrieval. Once coupled with the mechanics of the tool, the completed unit underwent several hundred in-shop tests, under various pressures and conditions, to insure the safety and reliability of this new technology.
A third party engineering house (DNV-GL) was requested to assess and verify the design of the technology and to witness the physical operation and abilities of the tool in a test facility. They were provided with all pertinent drawings and information of the materials utilized in the mechanical parts of the tool. A computer model was developed from this information to confirm validity of the design. Once this segment of assessment was complete, personnel from this firm were invited to witness the physical operation of the tool in Integral’s R&D facility to verify Integral’s claims regarding safety and reliability.
No concerns were indicated and a full report will be available to clients upon request.
This careful and deliberate procedure of design, development, and manufacture has resulted in producing a safe, efficient and reliable alternative method of pipeline isolation to serve the needs of the pipeline industry.
